About LOG2 files

The .LOG2 file is a binary transaction log associated with the Windows Registry. Unlike standard text-based logs, these files are part of the Transactional Registry (TxR) system introduced in Windows Vista, working in tandem with a primary hive file (like DAT) and a LOG1 file. Their primary function is data integrity: if the system crashes while writing to the registry, Windows uses the .LOG2 file to roll back or complete the changes upon reboot.

For most users, encountering a .LOG2 file is a source of confusion. You typically find them lingering in hidden system folders (e.g., alongside NTUSER.DAT) or during data recovery efforts. The immediate drawback is that despite the "log" extension, these are not human-readable. Opening them in a standard text editor like Notepad++ yields unintelligible binary garbage. Furthermore, because the Windows kernel locks these files while the OS is running, you cannot easily copy, move, or edit them without triggering "File in Use" errors. To make the contents useful - usually for forensic analysis or debugging system behavior - you must convert the binary data into a readable format. We recommend converting .LOG2 to TXT or CSV to parse the registry keys and values, or PDF if you need to archive the transaction history for evidence.

Convert.Guru analyzes your LOG2 file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted LOG1, $LOGFILE, DAT, XLOG, HWL and JOURNAL files.
