About LOCAL files
A .local file is typically a configuration override or settings file used to apply machine-specific preferences that differ from global defaults. This extension is a convention rather than a strict format, widely used in PC gaming (e.g., id Tech engines), database management (like Oracle SQL Developer Data Modeler), and development environments (TensorFlow logs).
The primary challenge with .local files is their ambiguity; because the extension describes the scope (local machine) rather than the content type, operating systems like Windows and macOS rarely assign a default application to open them. Users often encounter an "Unknown File Type" error. Furthermore, these files often contain plain text, XML, or serialized data that is unreadable without proper formatting. Opening them in standard text editors can result in unstructured walls of text if the internal encoding is complex.
To make these files usable, users should identify the source application and convert accordingly:
For Inspection & Editing: Convert to TXT or DOCX. This strips proprietary encoding quirks and allows for easy viewing of game commands or startup scripts.
For Data Analysis: If the source is Oracle or a development log, convert to XML or JSON to parse the structured data hierarchy.
For Archiving: Convert to PDF to freeze the current configuration state for documentation purposes.
Convert.Guru analyzes your LOCAL file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert LOCAL file to UTC, GMT, INI, CFG, CONF, CONFIG, JSON, XML, YAML, YML, TOML or ENV, you can use Oracle SQL Developer or similar software from the "Configuration Override Settings" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert ZSHRC, CONF, RCFILE, GITCONFIG, RC, PLIST, BASHRC, CONFIG, PROFILE, INI, PREFS or CFG files to LOCAL, try Oracle SQL Developer or another comparable tool in the "Configuration Override Settings" category.
The LOCAL Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our LOCAL converter.
