About LOCAL files
A .LOCAL file serves multiple functions across different software ecosystems, most commonly acting as a Local game configuration file for the id Tech game engine or a Data Modeler local settings file used by Oracle SQL Developer Data Modeler. In Unix-like operating systems, it functions as a local system startup script, while Google TensorFlow utilizes it as an event log file. Some document systems also use it simply to store raw PDF data locally. Because the .LOCAL extension is a generic naming convention rather than a standardized format, its internal structure varies wildly. It can contain plain text, XML data, or proprietary binary data. This creates significant disadvantages: users cannot open a .LOCAL file directly by double-clicking, and operating systems fail to assign a default application. Attempting to force-open binary variants in a standard text editor results in unreadable gibberish. Users frequently need to convert these files to standardized formats like .XML, .TXT, or .PDF to read, edit, or share the configuration parameters safely without installing heavy applications. Because these are often closed or highly specific application settings, standard online converters completely fail to process them. Often, only the original software can properly read or export the data. Our analyzer will inspect the file's raw headers and show text or internal content. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.
Convert.Guru analyzes your LOCAL file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert LOCAL file to UTC, GMT, INI, CFG, CONF, CONFIG, JSON, XML, YAML, YML, TOML or ENV, you can use Oracle SQL Developer or similar software from the "Local configuration and settings" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert ZSHRC, CONF, RCFILE, GITCONFIG, RC, PLIST, BASHRC, CONFIG, PROFILE, INI, PREFS or CFG files to LOCAL, try Oracle SQL Developer or another comparable tool in the "Local configuration and settings" category.
The LOCAL Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our LOCAL converter.
