The .LNT file format primarily functions as a PLC controller program file for Mitsubishi Electric MELSEC Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs). Engineers use these files to store automation logic, ladder diagrams, and structured text configurations used in factory environments. Additionally, the .LNT extension is used for Gimpel Software PC-lint/FlexeLint configuration files, as well as proprietary LiveNote Case Files utilized by legal professionals for court transcripts.
Opening and converting these files presents significant real-world challenges. Mitsubishi PLC .LNT files are deeply proprietary binary files. They require an active, expensive commercial license for software like GX Developer or GX Works to open, edit, or compile. They are not supported by web browsers and lack native operating system preview capabilities. Similarly, LiveNote files require dedicated legal software and often lock deposition data behind proprietary encryption or formatting.
Users typically need to convert these files to share logic diagrams with non-engineers or to migrate legal transcripts to open standards. The best target formats are PDF for sharing visual ladder logic or case transcripts, and TXT or CSV for extracting raw variable lists or configuration code.
