The .LNT extension represents a split in functionality between heavy industrial automation and software development. Most commonly, it is a PLC controller program file associated with Mitsubishi Electric MELSEC systems, often originating from legacy programming environments like MEDOC or older versions of GX Developer. In a development context, it serves as a configuration file for PC-lint (now part of Perforce), used to define rules for static code analysis.
The main issue for users with Mitsubishi .LNT files is proprietary lock-in. These files are typically part of a multi-file project structure and cannot be opened individually without the full engineering suite, which is expensive, resource-heavy, and strict about version compatibility. If you are dealing with a PC-lint file, the issue is simpler: your operating system likely does not recognize the extension, preventing you from viewing the plain text instructions inside.
For industrial archiving, the best approach is converting these legacy PLC files to PDF/A. This freezes the ladder logic or instruction list into a universally accessible document, eliminating the need to maintain obsolete virtual machines just to view code. for PC-lint or LiveNote files, converting (or identifying) them as TXT allows you to edit configurations or read transcripts in any standard editor like Notepad++ or VS Code.
