About LFD files

The .LFD file format primarily serves two distinctly different functions. In vintage PC gaming, it acts as a game resource archive file used by classic LucasArts titles like Star Wars: X-Wing and TIE Fighter. These files bundle cockpit panel data, 3D ship models, and audio into a single proprietary container. Alternatively, in modern enterprise environments, .LFD functions as a digital signage content file used by software like Samsung MagicInfo or LG SuperSign to control LED displays.

The main disadvantage of the .LFD format is its heavily closed, proprietary nature. LucasArts game archives are obsolete binary blobs that require specific community-built modding tools or DOS emulators to read. Modern operating systems cannot mount them natively. On the signage side, enterprise .LFD files often require expensive, recurring software subscriptions to edit or view. Standard online file converters routinely fail to process .LFD files because they lack the highly specialized decryption or unpacking logic required by these niche engines.

If you are trying to extract media, your best conversion targets depend on the file type. Game archives should ideally be unpacked into WAV for audio or BMP and OBJ for graphics. Digital signage .LFD files are sometimes structured as XML, meaning they can be renamed and edited as plain text.

Because .LFD is a closed, proprietary format, modifying it without the original software is extremely difficult. However, just drag and drop your file to convert.guru to identify the format, view it, and convert it when possible. If our analysis detects an underlying XML structure or standard embedded media, viewing or extraction may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your LFD file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted NXS, LCP and VIS files.

The LFD Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our LFD converter.
