About LFD files
The .LFD file extension primarily identifies a LucasArts Resource Archive, a legacy container format used in classic space simulation games like Star Wars: TIE Fighter and X-Wing. These files function like a proprietary ZIP, bundling sprites, voice-overs, cockpit graphics, and mission scripts into a single data blob to save disk space. In a completely different context, .LFD also stands for Large Format Display, serving as a content or configuration file for digital signage software solutions from Samsung (MagicInfo) and LG (SuperSign).
The main challenge with .LFD files is their opacity. For gamers and modders, the content is locked inside a binary shell that modern image editors like Adobe Photoshop cannot read. You cannot simply double-click to view a sprite or play a sound file; the internal assets rely on obsolete 1990s compression methods and color palettes. For digital signage users, the friction lies in proprietary lock-in; an LFD layout created for a Samsung display is often incompatible with other hardware, forcing users to rebuild content from scratch if they switch vendors.
To make these files usable, your conversion strategy depends on the origin. For game archives, the goal is extraction: convert the internal graphics to PNG or BMP for editing, and the audio streams to WAV for playback. For digital signage files, these are often "write-only" distribution formats; the best workflow is to locate the original source media or use the proprietary CMS to export the project as a standard MP4 video or PDF proof for archiving and sharing.
Convert.Guru analyzes your LFD file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert LFD file to CSV, JSON, XML, YAML, YML, TOML, INI, CFG, CONF, DAT, DB or SQL, you can use TIE Fighter or similar software from the "Game Resource Archive" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert DBF, XML, SQLITE, XLSX, SQL, TSV, ACCDB, YAML, MDB, CSV, ODS or JSON files to LFD, try TIE Fighter or another comparable tool in the "Game Resource Archive" category.
The LFD Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our LFD converter.
