The .letter file extension typically serves two very different technical purposes. Primarily, it functions as a system configuration file for Farstone Recovery Manager, storing parameters and states required to manage and restore system backups. Alternatively, it is generated by Unix and Linux command-line mail user agents as an unsent, aborted, or undeliverable email message (traditionally named dead.letter).
Farstone system files require the native Farstone environment to function properly. Unix mail drafts, however, are essentially standard plain text and can be opened in advanced text editors like Vim or Notepad++. The main disadvantage of the Farstone .letter format is that it is strictly proprietary. Opening it in standard editors yields unreadable binary data, and standard online converters fail to process it because the internal structure is closed and undocumented. Unix mail drafts, on the other hand, are merely temporary text spools. Leaving them unmanaged clutters the system directory, and they lack the rich formatting and structured metadata of modern EML or MSG files.
If you are dealing with a Unix mail file, converting it to TXT or PDF is highly recommended for permanent archiving, though some header routing information might be simplified. Farstone .letter files are difficult to convert because only the original software can properly read or export the configuration data. They are fundamentally not meant to be converted into documents.
