It is a proprietary binary format used to store 3D meshes for creature models, village architecture, and environmental weather systems within the classic 2001 god-game Black & White. Alternatively, the .L3D extension is utilized in the civil engineering sector as a Leica iCON Alignment File, storing road centreline coordinate geometry for surveying machine control software.
Due to its extreme age and proprietary nature, the Black & White .L3D file presents immense compatibility challenges. The format relies on a closed binary structure, identified by the L3D0 magic header, that standard 3D suites like Blender or Cinema 4D simply cannot parse. Furthermore, the mesh geometry is strictly decoupled from its textures, meaning opening the file outside the game engine often results in a blank, untextured wireframe.
