The .KWZ file extension is almost exclusively a proprietary video file format created by Nintendo for Flipnote Studio 3D on the Nintendo 3DS console. It serves as the successor to the earlier PPM format, storing animated sketch frames using lossless block-based I-frame and P-frame video compression, stereoscopic 3D depth metadata, and up to four tracks of audio encoded in a custom ADPCM variant. In rare instances, .KWZ is also referenced in association with Kindle Word Wise data files or minor plugins for Krita.
Users heavily need to convert these files because the format is locked inside a closed, proprietary ecosystem. With the Nintendo 3DS eShop officially closed, obtaining the original software to view these files natively is incredibly difficult, and standard desktop video players and web browsers cannot natively decode the unique video compression. It is highly recommended to convert .KWZ animations to standard video formats like MP4 or AVI, or animated GIF images for easy web sharing. Note that converting to a standard 2D video format will inherently flatten and discard the original stereoscopic 3D depth effect.
This file format is exceptionally difficult to open or convert because of its unique, undocumented structure. Standard media converters will fail to parse the visual frames and often misinterpret the proprietary ADPCM audio stream, outputting loud, corrupted static noise instead of the intended sound.
