Convert KON to another file type
To convert your KON file to another format, you need ETACS Decoder or other Data software.
Convert a file to KON
To convert other file formats to the "Automotive Configuration File" file type, you need software like ETACS Decoder or a similar tool.
About KON files
The .KON file extension represents a unique intersection of automotive diagnostics and legacy desktop software. Its most critical modern use is as an Automotive ECU Coding File generated by ETACS Decoder, a specialized tool for configuring Mitsubishi vehicle electronics (ETACS). These files contain UTF-8 encoded string data that defines parameters for features like door locks, lighting, and alarms. Users typically encounter these when backing up their vehicle's configuration before applying mods. The friction here is high: the file is text-based but structured specifically for the decoder software, meaning opening it in a standard editor like Notepad often yields confusing data without the proper context.
Alternatively, a .KON file may be a legacy Konfabulator Widget Definition, used by the discontinued Yahoo! Widget Engine. In this context, the file is strictly XML code that defines the behavior and appearance of a desktop widget. Because the engine was retired in 2012, these files are effectively "orphaned" and cannot be run on modern operating systems (Windows 10/11 or macOS) without significant workarounds. A third, minority use case involves SOFiSTiK CAD software, where the file stores reinforcement configurations.
Conversion Targets:
For Inspection (All Types): Convert or rename to TXT or XML. Since both primary formats use text-based encoding (UTF-8 or XML), changing the extension allows you to open them in code editors like VS Code to inspect the raw data structure.
For Archiving: Convert to PDF if you simply need a static record of the code or configuration settings for documentation purposes.
For Recovery: If dealing with a Widget file, you cannot "convert" it to a modern app, but you can extract the assets (images/scripts) by treating the parent container as a ZIP file.
Convert.Guru analyzes your KON file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert KON file to TXT, RTF, DOC, DOCX, ODT, PAGES, TEX, LATEX, MD, MARKDOWN, LOG or NFO, you can use ETACS Decoder or similar software from the "Automotive ECU Coding Data" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert PDF, DOC, ASC, TODO, NFO, MEMO, README, DOCX, JPG, TXT, NOTE or RTF files to KON, try ETACS Decoder or another comparable tool in the "Automotive ECU Coding Data" category.
The KON Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our KON converter.
