The .KON file extension represents a unique intersection of automotive diagnostics and legacy desktop software. Its most critical modern use is as an Automotive ECU Coding File generated by ETACS Decoder, a specialized tool for configuring Mitsubishi vehicle electronics (ETACS). These files contain UTF-8 encoded string data that defines parameters for features like door locks, lighting, and alarms. Users typically encounter these when backing up their vehicle's configuration before applying mods. The friction here is high: the file is text-based but structured specifically for the decoder software, meaning opening it in a standard editor like Notepad often yields confusing data without the proper context.

Alternatively, a .KON file may be a legacy Konfabulator Widget Definition, used by the discontinued Yahoo! Widget Engine. In this context, the file is strictly XML code that defines the behavior and appearance of a desktop widget.
