Extract text from Coding and widget files (KON)

A .KON file is primarily an Automotive ECU coding data file used by ETACS Decoder and the Mitsubishi MUT-III diagnostic system. These files store crucial electronic control unit configurations in a UTF-8 text format. Alternatively, a .KON file may be an obsolete XML-based configuration file for the discontinued Yahoo! Widget Engine (originally called Konfabulator), or a CAD reinforcement configuration file used by SOFiSTiK AG software.
Opening or editing .KON files presents strict challenges. Automotive ECU files are proprietary. While they contain plain text, applying them to a vehicle requires expensive MUT-III diagnostic hardware or an active, paid license for third-party tools like ETACS Decoder. Modifying the raw text without understanding the specific hexadecimal or structured data can brick a vehicle's electronic system. Meanwhile, Yahoo! Widgets are completely obsolete; the official engine was shut down in 2012, rendering the widgets useless on modern operating systems.
If you need to extract the data, converting a .KON file to TXT, XML, or CSV is the best workaround. This allows you to safely read the raw automotive parameters or the widget's underlying code in a standard text editor. Keep in mind that converting the file only makes it readable; it will not make an automotive configuration magically executable without the original hardware.
