About KIX files
A .KIX file is a plaintext script written in KiXtart, a legacy free-format scripting language developed by Ruud van Velsen for Microsoft Windows environments. Historically, these scripts were heavily utilized by system administrators to automate network logon tasks, map network drives, and handle software installations across Windows NT, 2000, and XP networks. They are executed using the dedicated KiXtart interpreter, typically deployed as the standalone kix32.exe executable.
The main disadvantage of the .KIX format today is its obsolescence. Modern IT infrastructures have largely abandoned KiXtart in favor of native PowerShell. Running a .KIX script on contemporary systems requires manually deploying the legacy executable, creating an unnecessary and outdated dependency. Furthermore, its syntax is entirely proprietary and unsupported by modern IDEs without third-party add-ons.
Converting a .KIX file generally means migrating its legacy logic to modern scripting standards. The best target is TXT for safely extracting the plaintext code. From there, administrators usually transition the logic into PS1 (PowerShell) or BAT (Batch) files. Note that direct 1:1 automated code translation is rarely reliable due to the unique syntax of the language.
Standard online converters fail to process .KIX files because they attempt to convert the proprietary syntax rather than handling the file as raw text.
Convert.Guru analyzes your KIX file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert KIX file to EXE, MSI, APP, DMG, DEB, RPM, PKG, RUN, SH, BAT, CMD or COM, you can use KiXtart or similar software from the "Windows Network Automation Script" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert JAR, APP, SCR, IPA, COM, AAB, PS1, DMG, VBS, EXE, XAPK or MSI files to KIX, try KiXtart or another comparable tool in the "Windows Network Automation Script" category.
The KIX Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our KIX converter.
