About KIM files

The .kim format is highly fragmented, which makes it challenging to handle. Most often, a .KIM file contains a firmware update for the VPR-FL7 satellite receiver. Alternatively, it can be a Keyman Input Method keyboard configuration from SIL International, an interactive whiteboard presentation for Kim Pro, or a specialized image file from the HAIS software suite.

Because .kim is a closed, proprietary format used by entirely different hardware and software vendors, it has severe limitations. You cannot natively open these files on Windows or macOS. Attempting to open a firmware .kim file in a standard text editor yields unreadable binary code. Furthermore, standard online converters fail to process them because they lack universal file headers.

Converting a .kim file depends entirely on its specific origin. Firmware files cannot be converted to documents like PDF or DOCX; they must be flashed directly to the receiver hardware. If the file is a Kim Pro presentation or a HAIS image, you need the original software to export the data to standard formats like PPTX or JPG.

This file format is difficult to open or convert because often only the original software or hardware can properly read or export the data. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your KIM file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted JPG, KM2, KC and BRC files.

The KIM Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our KIM converter.
