A .KDH file is a proprietary academic document format primarily used by the China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) to distribute Chinese research papers, academic journals, and dissertations. The official software required to read these files is CAJViewer, which is heavily tailored to the Chinese academic ecosystem.
The main disadvantage of the .KDH format is its highly restricted nature. It requires a specific software installation that many international users or casual researchers do not have. This causes major compatibility problems on mobile devices, macOS, and standard academic reference managers like Zotero or Mendeley. Furthermore, the format locks down text selection and sharing to protect copyrights. To regain control over the document, users typically need to convert it to a PDF file for universal reading and printing, or to a DOCX file for text extraction and editing. During conversion, proprietary CNKI metadata or digital rights management (DRM) restrictions will be removed.
This file format is difficult to open or convert because it is a closed, proprietary format designed to lock users into the CNKI platform. Often, only the original CAJViewer software can properly read or export the data. Standard online converters fail to process it because the encryption or file structure is undocumented. However, a significant portion of .KDH files (roughly 22%) are actually standard PDF files disguised with a different extension.
