A .KAT file is most frequently a DIF Template used by Thomson Reuters ONESOURCE and GoSystem Tax software. Its primary function is to act as a "road map," linking columns from a generic DIF (Data Interchange Format) spreadsheet to specific fields within a corporate tax return (e.g., Form 1120 or 1065).
Users commonly have issues when they attempt to double-click a .KAT file, expecting it to open in Microsoft Excel like its companion DIF file. However, because it is a proprietary mapping configuration rather than a data container, Excel cannot interpret it. This proprietary lock-in typically requires a specialized, high-cost license to edit. A secondary, niche use for this extension is as a catalog database for Fleischmann model railroad software, used to organize digital inventories of model trains.
For Tax Templates, the best "conversion" target is often Plain Text (.TXT) or XML to audit the mapping logic without the software. For Fleischmann catalogs, converting to PDF or CSV is ideal for archiving and printing lists without needing the legacy railroad software.
