About JRC files

The .jrc file is a binary image of a physical ROM cartridge originally manufactured for the IBM PCjr system. These files are primarily used by retro-computing enthusiasts and software archivists to preserve legacy 8-bit games and productivity applications.

To open or execute a .jrc file, you need a specialized hardware emulator such as MAME or PCem.

Users often need to convert or extract data from this file because it is a closed, proprietary hardware dump. It has zero native support in Windows, macOS, or modern web browsers. The format contains raw 8088 machine code and graphical assets that are completely inaccessible without specialized software, creating massive barriers for modern use.

If you need to use the file in different emulator environments, the best target formats are raw BIN or standard ROM files. Keep in mind that converting away from .jrc may strip specific PCjr cartridge header mapping data, causing the ROM to fail in strictly configured emulators.

This file format is exceptionally difficult to open or convert because standard online converters do not understand legacy hardware architectures. Often, only specific emulation software can properly read or execute the raw data. We can inspect the binary file, display a hexadecimal view of the internal contents, and extract embedded plain text strings. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your JRC file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted CSV, HAP, CRU and BOA files.

The JRC Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our JRC converter.
