Most .HAP files are HarmonyOS Ability Packages developed by Huawei for their proprietary operating system, HarmonyOS. Similar to Android's APK format, these files contain the compiled code, resources, third-party libraries, and configuration files needed to install and run an application on a Huawei device. A secondary use for the .HAP extension is as a Hardness testing data file generated by the Helmut Fischer WIN-HCU material testing software.
These formats present severe limitations outside their native environments. A HarmonyOS package cannot be executed on Windows, macOS, or standard Android devices without a dedicated emulator or Huawei's DevEco Studio. Furthermore, the WIN-HCU data file is locked inside a highly specialized, proprietary binary format that requires an expensive commercial license to read.
Because users cannot run the app natively, they often need to convert or extract the .HAP file to access its internal assets. Since the Huawei package is structurally a ZIP archive, the best workaround is to extract it to view the underlying XML manifest files, PNG icons, and compiled assets. Users with WIN-HCU data typically need to export their results to CSV or XLSX for reporting, which must be done within the original software.
Because app packages and specialized industrial formats are complex or proprietary, standard online converters fail to process them. Often, only the original software can properly read or export the data.
