About JPG_LARGE files
A .jpg_large file is technically identical to a standard JPG image, but it carries a non-standard file extension generated by X (formerly Twitter) servers. When users save images directly from tweets in certain web browsers, the content delivery network (CDN) appends "_large" to indicate the resolution variant. The primary disadvantage of this format is purely functional: Windows, macOS, and mobile operating systems do not natively associate the .jpg_large extension with default viewers like Microsoft Photos or Apple Preview. This leaves the file "orphaned," forcing users to manually select a program to open it or tediously rename the file extension to jpg to make it usable. While the internal data is standard JFIF compression, the file effectively behaves like a proprietary lock-in due to this naming quirk. For immediate usability, the best workflow is converting these files to standard JPG to restore system compatibility. for archiving or editing, converting to PNG prevents further generational loss, while WebP is ideal for re-uploading to the web.
