A .JPC file is a raw image codestream formatted using the JPEG 2000 standard. Unlike standard JP2 files which include a full file header, metadata, and color profile information, .JPC files contain only the raw, mathematically compressed image data using wavelet compression. These files are typically generated and managed by open-source libraries like JasPer or OpenJPEG. In rare cases, the .JPC extension is also used for Portable Pixmap raster images within the Netpbm ecosystem.
The primary disadvantage of the .JPC format is its severe lack of compatibility. Because it lacks a standard container wrapper, most default operating system image viewers, standard web browsers, and basic design apps simply cannot read the file. Users often find themselves forced to install specialized image viewers or compile command-line decoders just to look at the image. It is strictly an engineering or archival format, not a format for sharing or publishing.
To actually use or share the image, conversion is mandatory. For universal compatibility, email attachments, and document insertion, convert to JPG.
