A .jpc file is a raw JPEG 2000 Codestream, containing the compressed image data without the standard file format wrapper or metadata found in JP2 files. Unlike standard JPEG images, this format utilizes wavelet compression technology, which allows for superior scalability and fidelity, often used in medical imaging (DICOM), satellite imagery, and digital cinema.
However, the lack of a standard header makes .jpc files notoriously difficult to open. Most modern web browsers (Chrome, Edge, Firefox) do not support the format natively, and standard image viewers like Windows Photos or macOS Preview often fail to recognize the raw stream, treating it as a corrupt file. Furthermore, the decoding process is computationally intensive, causing lag on older hardware. To make these images usable for sharing, web publishing, or general viewing, it is highly recommended to convert them. For web use, convert to JPG or WebP to ensure browser compatibility. For archiving without losing quality, convert to PNG or wrap the stream into a standard JP2 container using tools like ImageMagick.
