About JIS files
The .JIS file is a plain text document encoded using the Japanese Industrial Standards for character sets. These files were heavily used in the past to store and transmit Japanese text, utilizing specific encoding maps like Shift-JIS, ISO-2022-JP, or EUC-JP. You can open these files using advanced text editors such as Notepad++ or Visual Studio Code.
The major disadvantage of the .JIS format is poor compatibility with modern software. Today, almost all operating systems, web browsers, and text processors default to UTF-8 encoding. If a user opens a .JIS file in a standard application, the software usually fails to detect the legacy encoding. This causes mojibake - a frustrating issue where the text is replaced by completely garbled, unreadable symbols.
To solve this, users must convert .JIS files to modern formats. The best target is a standard TXT file saved with UTF-8 encoding. If you need to share the file and ensure the characters display exactly as intended regardless of the viewer's fonts, converting to PDF is the best option.
Converting these files is notoriously difficult because standard online converters often fail to identify the specific Japanese character map, resulting in corrupted output. We can inspect the file, automatically detect the supported underlying text encoding, and convert it to modern standards without losing your data.
Convert.Guru analyzes your JIS file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
Users also converted TXT, STQ, TX?, YBTXT and ISO files.

The JIS Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our JIS converter.
