About J2I files

A .j2i file primarily functions as a JPEG 2000 Image Index (often utilizing the JPEG 2000 Interactive Protocol, or JPIP). It is heavily utilized by GIS software like ERDAS IMAGINE to stream massive spatial and satellite images. Instead of loading a terabyte-sized image into memory, the .j2i file stores metadata and spatial index information. This allows remote clients to request and render only the specific region of the image they are currently viewing. A rare secondary use for the .j2i extension is as a Jazz 2 Internet Link File used by Epic Games to connect players to multiplayer servers in the classic game Jazz Jackrabbit 2.

The primary disadvantage of the .j2i format is that it rarely contains actual image pixels or executable game data. It is typically a proprietary pointer or index file. If you only have the .j2i file and lack the companion jp2 or j2k image file, you cannot view the picture. Standard online image converters fail when processing these files because they search for raster pixel arrays, not text-based or binary index trees.

You cannot directly convert a .j2i index file into a JPG or PNG image. Our analyzer will inspect the .j2i file and extract any readable text, XML, or metadata content. This diagnostic step helps you identify the location of the actual image data on the network or recover the multiplayer server IP address.

Convert.Guru analyzes your J2I file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted J2B, J2V and J2S files.

The J2I Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our J2I converter.
