The .ITS file extension is a source of frequent confusion because it refers to two completely different file types. Most commonly (32% of cases), it is a Microsoft InfoTech Storage file, a proprietary container format used by Windows to bundle HTML, images, and system data - functioning essentially as the engine behind CHM help files. Users often encounter these when digging through legacy Windows directories or unzipping help documentation. The file is not meant to be opened directly; it is an archive that requires specific extraction tools to access the internal content.
However, in the creative domain, an .ITS file is an Impulse Tracker Sample. This is a vintage audio format containing a single sound sample (like a drum hit or vocal snippet) used by the Impulse Tracker sequencer. Musicians and archivists need to convert these to modern standards like WAV or MP3 for use in contemporary Digital Audio Workstations (DAWs) like FL Studio or Audacity. Less frequently, .ITS may refer to an Internationalization Tag Set file, an XML-based standard defined by the W3C for language localization, often compatible with Inkscape.
