To convert other file formats to the "Proprietary Data Log" file type, you need software like Simplicity Studio or a similar tool.
The .isd file extension is a notorious "black box" format because it is used by several completely unrelated software ecosystems, making identification difficult without context. Most commonly (approx. 14%), it is a Network Analyzer Capture file generated by Silicon Labs tools like Simplicity Studio, containing raw data packets from Zigbee or Thread networks. These files are strictly proprietary and cannot be opened by standard packet sniffers like Wireshark without prior conversion. Another significant portion (approx. 17%) comes from Instrument Systems spectrometers or GraphPad statistical software, storing scientific measurement data.
Users typically encounter friction because these files are locked into expensive, niche industry software. A lab technician or network engineer often needs to extract this data into universal formats for reporting or external analysis. For network captures, the goal is usually conversion to PCAP or CSV for use in third-party tools. For scientific data, users almost always need to convert .isd to XLSX (Excel) or CSV to generate charts and reports outside the original legacy environment. Legacy developers might also encounter .isd files as Dialog definitions in older versions of InstallShield.
