Convert a file to IPHOTO
To convert other file formats to the "Photo Library Package" file type, you need software like Apple Photos or a similar tool.
About IPHOTO files
The .iphoto file is a database package used by the discontinued macOS application, Apple iPhoto. It stores user image collections, album structures, face tags, and metadata.
The format was exclusively managed by Apple iPhoto. In 2015, Apple replaced this software with the modern Apple Photos application.
Users face significant challenges with this format. It is completely proprietary and heavily restricted to the Apple ecosystem. A .iphoto file is actually a macOS package, meaning it acts as a single file on a Mac but is essentially a complex folder structure on Windows or Linux. Modern macOS versions no longer run iPhoto, locking users out of their old databases.
The best solution is to migrate the database to the modern Apple Photos format, or extract the underlying JPG, HEIC, and PNG files. Extracting raw files loses album groupings and non-destructive edit history, but guarantees you recover the actual master photos.
This file format is exceptionally difficult to open or convert online. Standard converters fail because it is a directory bundle, not a single flat media file. Often only the original Apple software can properly read or export the internal database data. If our analysis detects the underlying JPG or PNG files inside the package, viewing or extraction may still be possible.
Convert.Guru analyzes your IPHOTO file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert IPHOTO file to PDF, JPEG, JPG, PNG, GIF, BMP, TIFF, TIF, WEBP, ICO, CUR or PSD, you can use Apple Photos or similar software from the "Photo Library Database" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert RAW, PNG, AI, NEF, PSB, DNG, SVG, GIF, EPS, JPG, ARW or PDF files to IPHOTO, try Apple Photos or another comparable tool in the "Photo Library Database" category.
The IPHOTO Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our IPHOTO converter.
