About IN_ files
The .in_ file is a relic of older Microsoft Windows installation optimization: it is a compressed version of a standard INF (Setup Information) or INI configuration file. While these files save disk space on installation media - such as Microsoft Windows installers or Brother printer drivers - they act as a locked container for the actual data. You cannot open an .in_ file directly in a text editor like Notepad++; attempting to do so will display unreadable binary garbage rather than the configuration directives you need.
To view or edit the contents, you must "expand" (decompress) the file back to its original state. This proprietary compression (often using the Microsoft Cabinet or Diamond algorithm) requires specific utilities like the command-line expand.exe tool or third-party archivers like 7-Zip. For quick access without memorizing command-line syntax, convert the file here. If you need to inspect driver details or modify installation scripts, convert it to INF or TXT. If you are archiving legacy drivers, extracting to INF is mandatory.
Convert.Guru analyzes your IN_ file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The IN_ Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our IN_ converter.
