IMB files typically serve two distinct legacy functions: archiving auction data or storing mind maps. The most common variety is a backup archive generated by the now-discontinued eBay Turbo Lister, a desktop tool used by sellers to bulk-edit and upload listings. These files act as local snapshots of inventory, containing descriptions, pricing, and image references. However, because eBay sunsetted Turbo Lister in 2017, opening these files natively is nearly impossible on modern operating systems without a virtual machine. The file structure is essentially a GZIP compressed container, meaning users often struggle to access the raw data (usually a proprietary database like MDB or DB, or generic CSV extracts) trapped inside.
Alternatively, an .IMB file may be a project created by older versions of iMindMap (now known as Ayoa). These files store visual brainstorming sessions, branch structures, and attached notes. The primary difficulty here is version obsolescence; newer versions of Ayoa utilize the IMX format, leaving legacy .IMB files difficult to view without conversion. For eBay archives, the pragmatic conversion path is to ZIP or CSV to salvage the text data. For mind maps, converting to PDF or JPG provides a future-proof way to view the diagram without relying on subscription-based proprietary software.
