About ILD files
The .ild file format is primarily used as the ILDA Image Data Transfer Format by the International Laser Display Association for use in a laser lighting display. It stores frame sequences, color palettes, and 2D/3D coordinate data for physical laser projectors. These files are typically created and managed using specialized software like Pangolin Lasershow Designer or open-source tools like LaserBoy. A secondary, much rarer use (around 5% of files) is for German pharmaceutical supply chain data managed by IFA GmbH. The primary disadvantage of the .ild format is its highly specialized nature. It is a niche vector format that standard media players, video editors, and web browsers cannot open. Users often face challenges sharing laser animations with clients who do not own expensive projection software. Furthermore, the format has multiple legacy versions (Format 0 through 5), leading to compatibility issues even among professional laser software. To make these files accessible, users typically convert .ild to standard video formats like MP4 or AVI for viewing, or SVG for static vector frames. Note that converting to raster video loses the precise vector point routing instructions required by physical laser scanners. Because .ild is a deeply specialized binary format, standard online converters usually fail to process it. Usually, only the original laser show software can properly read or export the data.
