The .IL file extension most commonly represents Intermediate Language (IL) source code. These files contain human-readable assembly instructions generated by .NET compilers before being compiled into machine code. Alternatively, .IL files are used as SKILL language scripts for IC (Integrated Circuit) design automation in Cadence Virtuoso. Rarely, some server errors cause standard PDF documents to be downloaded with the .IL extension. .IL files are highly specialized and restrictive. For .NET developers, they are usually output files generated by the Microsoft IL Disassembler (Ildasm.exe), making them tedious to read and impossible to execute directly without reassembly. Cadence SKILL scripts are strictly proprietary, requiring expensive licensing for Cadence tools to execute. Standard text editors can open them, but lack the syntax highlighting and context required to make the code highly usable.
