About IFN files

The .IFN file extension is primarily used as an Igor Pro Notebook or Function file by WaveMetrics Igor Pro. These files store user-defined functions, macros, and formatted notes utilized in scientific data analysis and complex graphing workflows. Alternatively, .IFN files operate as executable modules for certain PC games, specifically those published by iWin Inc or managed via iFunBox. In these gaming contexts, the file is structurally a compiled EXE file disguised under a different extension.

The core disadvantage of the .IFN format is its strict dependence on specialized software. Igor Pro is a niche, commercial application; without an expensive license, users cannot natively execute or render these notebook files. They are completely incompatible with standard office suites and web browsers. On the other hand, the executable variant of the .IFN file ties users strictly to the Windows operating system and presents a security risk, as running obscure binaries can execute malware.

When converting an Igor Pro .IFN file, your most realistic targets are plain text formats like TXT or MD to salvage the raw code, mathematical formulas, or notebook text. Executable .IFN variants cannot be converted into documents or media files whatsoever.

Because this is a closed, proprietary format or a compiled binary, standard online converters will routinely fail to process it. Usually, only the original software can properly parse the syntax or run the embedded program. However, just drag and drop your file to identify the format, view it, and convert it when possible on convert.guru. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format - such as extracting plain text from an Igor script - viewing or conversion may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your IFN file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted PXP, IBW and ITX files.

The IFN Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our IFN converter.
