About ICN files
The .icn extension is a fragmented format used across legacy gaming consoles, mobile apps, and obscure desktop software, making it notoriously difficult to handle without specific knowledge of the file's origin.
1. PlayStation 2 & Nintendo 3DS Icons
The most common .icn files (approx. 33%) are 3D animated icons found on PlayStation 2 memory cards. Unlike standard flat images, these contain 3D mesh data and textures used by the PS2 browser to visualize save data. Similarly, Nintendo 3DS homebrew applications use .icn for application metadata. These files are proprietary and cannot be opened by standard image viewers like Windows Photos or Adobe Photoshop. Attempting to open them directly often results in binary garbage or error messages.
2. Samsung S Note Files
On older Android devices, Samsung Electronics used .icn for notes created in the S Note application. These are often essentially ZIP containers holding XML data and media assets. The friction here is high: modern versions of Samsung Notes often fail to import these legacy files directly, leaving users with inaccessible digital memos.
Recommended Conversion Targets
Since .icn files are rarely supported by modern operating systems, conversion is the only practical way to view or archive the content:
For Gaming/Archiving: Convert PS2/3DS icons to OBJ (for the 3D model) or PNG (for the texture view) to preserve the visual history without needing an emulator like PCSX2.
For Samsung Notes: Convert these files to PDF or standard image formats like JPG to ensure your notes are readable on any device, independent of the Samsung ecosystem.
For Desktop Icons: If the file is from legacy desktop software (like Stardock tools), convert it to ICO (Windows) or ICNS (macOS) for immediate system compatibility.
Use Convert.Guru to open and convert your ICN file.
If you want to convert ICN file to WEBP, CUR or PSB, you can use PCSX2 or similar software from the "Console Save Icon & Notes" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert RAW, PNG, AI, NEF, PSB, DNG, SVG, GIF, EPS, JPG, ARW or PDF files to ICN, try PCSX2 or another comparable tool in the "Console Save Icon & Notes" category.
The ICN Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our ICN converter.
