An .icews file is an XML-based application descriptor used by the Intercontinental Exchange (ICE) to launch its WebICE trading platform. It functions essentially as a Java Network Launch Protocol (JNLP) file, providing instructions to the Java runtime environment on how to download, configure, and execute the remote application. The file does not contain actual software code; it only contains network paths, security configurations, and memory allocation parameters.
Modern operating systems and browsers struggle with .icews files because the underlying technology, Java Web Start, was deprecated by Oracle in Java 11. Consequently, users frequently encounter errors when trying to open these files, or they are prompted to select an application manually.
