About HZ files

The .hz file format primarily serves two completely different technical purposes: it acts as a compressed database migration file or encrypted script for the Hazelcast Jet and Flyway database tools, or it functions as a legacy Chinese (Hanzi) text file. Files meant for database operations are heavily compressed or encrypted cluster nodes that govern data migration. The older text format uses a specialized 7-bit character encoding designed in 1989 to transmit Chinese characters over early internet protocols. Both formats present significant usability challenges. The database variant is proprietary, meaning you are locked into the specific vendor ecosystem; you cannot simply open it with a standard database viewer without a costly subscription or complex command-line setup. The text variant suffers from severe compatibility issues - modern operating systems and web browsers default to UTF-8, causing .hz text files to render as garbled mojibake. To make this data usable, database scripts should ideally be exported to SQL or CSV formats for human-readable auditing. Hanzi files must be transcoded to a standard TXT file using UTF-8 encoding. Because the database versions of this format are closed and proprietary, they are exceptionally difficult to open or convert with standard online tools. Often, only the original software can properly read or export the encrypted data. If our analysis detects a supported underlying text or embedded SQL structure, viewing or conversion to common formats may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your HZ file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted MP3, BIG5, RPM and NM files.

The HZ Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our HZ converter.
