The .HUF file extension typically represents either a FedEx Upload file or a Huffman-encoded compressed file. For shipping logistics, FedEx Ship Manager relies on .HUF files to process bulk package data, often utilizing an underlying XML structure. In other contexts, developers use the .HUF extension for custom archives compressed with the Huffman coding algorithm. These archives frequently store game localization data (like in Crytek's CryEngine), mobile phone backups by Sharp, or Java serialized objects. The primary disadvantage of the .HUF format is its severe fragmentation and proprietary nature. Because 'Huffman coding' is a method rather than a standardized file format, a .HUF file created by a mobile phone backup tool cannot be opened by a game engine or a standard archive extractor like 7-Zip. They are closed containers. Furthermore, FedEx .HUF files require specialized corporate software to read properly, which is frustrating for users trying to audit shipping logs.
