About HTT files
The .HTT file extension represents a HyperText Template, a legacy file format used by Microsoft Windows (specifically 98, 2000, and XP) to customize the appearance of folders via the "Active Desktop" feature. Essentially, these are standard HTML files wrapped in a system-specific extension, often containing HTML, CSS, and scripts (VBScript or JScript) to dynamically display file lists.
Users typically encounter these files (Folder.htt) when recovering old data or unhiding system files. The main problem is that .HTT files are obsolete, pose a security risk (historically exploited by the Kak worm), and do not open automatically in modern browsers like Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge. Furthermore, because they contain scripts, antivirus software often flags them.
For a safe conversion workflow:
For Web/Viewing: Rename the extension from .HTT to HTML to open it in any browser.
For Editing/Inspection: Open directly in a code editor like Notepad++ or Visual Studio Code to view the source code without executing potentially harmful scripts.
Note: A distinct, smaller percentage of .HTT files are Automotive Tuning Templates used by HP Tuners VCM Suite. These are proprietary configuration files for ECU tuning and cannot be converted to text or HTML; they must be opened with the VCM Editor software.
Convert.Guru analyzes your HTT file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert HTT file to SYS, DLL, EXE, DRV, VXD, 386, COM, BAT, CMD, SCR, PIF or LNK, you can use Microsoft Windows or similar software from the "Windows Folder View Template" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert MSI, EXE, REG, MST, LNK, CAB, CAT, DRV, INF, SYS, MSU or DLL files to HTT, try Microsoft Windows or another comparable tool in the "Windows Folder View Template" category.
The HTT Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our HTT converter.
