About HPJ files

If you have an .hpj file, you are likely dealing with one of two completely different formats. The most common (51%) is an encrypted configuration file used by Palette CAD, a premium 3D design tool for interior architecture. These files store proprietary user settings, material definitions, or project-specific configurations. Because they are encrypted and tightly coupled to the Palette CAD environment, they cannot be opened or converted by third-party tools. To use the data inside, you must open the file within the original Palette CAD software and use the Export function to save your 3D models as DXF, DWG, or OBJ files.

The second common type (23%) is a Help Project File used by the legacy Microsoft Help Workshop. This is a plain text file - functionally similar to a "makefile" - that organizes RTF (Rich Text Format) documents and BMP images to compile them into a Windows Help (Answer-First) file (bolded.HLP). While the HLP format is now obsolete on Windows 10 and 11, the .hpj file itself can be opened in any text editor like Notepad or Notepad++ to view the project structure. To convert this content for modern web use, you typically migrate the project to HTML Help (bolded.CHM) using Microsoft HTML Help Workshop or convert the source RTF files directly to PDF.
