.HOP files are primarily proprietary CNC machine programs generated by HOPS (part of the Campus suite), a CAD/CAM solution developed by HOLZ-HER for professional woodworking. These files contain the geometric data, tooling parameters, and drilling instructions required to drive CNC machining centers.
The main challenge with .HOP files is their dependency on a specific machine configuration and external macro definitions. A file created for one 5-axis router often fails to open or run on a different machine unless the exact environment is replicated. Furthermore, these files are not natively supported by standard design software like AutoCAD or SketchUp, making it difficult for architects or clients to view the production data.
To overcome these compatibility hurdles, the best approach is converting the vector geometry within the .HOP file to DXF or DWG formats. This allows the design layout to be edited in almost any CAD application. For documentation and quoting purposes, converting the visual representation to PDF ensures that shop floor staff can view the part dimensions without needing a license for the HOPS software.
Note: In the context of software development, a .HOP file might alternatively be a project database saved by Hopper Disassembler, a tool used for reverse engineering executables. In gaming, it may appear as a packed asset archive in titles developed by Heavy Iron Studios, containing compressed textures and models.
