The .HOF extension is most frequently associated with OMSI 2 (The Omnibus Simulator), serving as a "Hof" (Depot) file that acts as a database for bus destination displays and route systems. These files are structurally plain text but use rigid formatting to define bus stops, route paths, and IBIS codes. A common limitation for modders and players is that while .HOF files are technically text, Windows does not associate them with text editors by default, and strict syntax requirements mean a single misplaced tab can break the in-game matrix display. Converting or renaming these files to TXT allows for easier editing in tools like Notepad++, while converting to PDF is ideal for creating printable route lists for drivers.
A secondary, less common use of the .HOF format is for photo print orders generated by legacy kiosk software like HAL2001 or services associated with CanvasPeople. These files encapsulate order details, customer data, and image references for lab processing. Because the software generating these files is often obsolete or proprietary to specific photo labs, users are effectively locked out of their own data. Converting these archives to CSV or TXT is often the only way to parse the order history or retrieve metadata without the original kiosk hardware.
