To convert other file formats to the "Ecodial Project Report" file type, you need software like Schneider Electric Ecodial or a similar tool.

About HIL files

The .HIL file format primarily functions as an electrical installation project file or report generated by Schneider Electric Ecodial. These files store complex electrical network calculations, equipment sizing data, and switchboard configurations used by electrical engineers. A secondary use of the .HIL extension is as a geographical raster image file adhering to the German Land Surveying Standard, used in regional Geographic Information Systems (GIS).

The primary disadvantage of the .HIL format is its heavily siloed, proprietary nature. Ecodial files are specialized containers - often utilizing standard ZIP compression internally - but the data inside is meaningless without Ecodial's calculation engine. This means you cannot simply send a .HIL file to a client who does not have a licensed installation of the software. Similarly, standard image viewers cannot parse the specific georeferenced metadata embedded within German Land Surveying .HIL raster files.

To share electrical project data, the best target format is PDF. Exporting to PDF captures the network diagrams and calculation reports without requiring specialized software, though the underlying mathematical models will be lost. For the GIS raster variants, converting to TIF, JPG, or PNG is recommended for broad compatibility.

Because .HIL files are closed and highly specific, standard online converters consistently fail to process them. Often, only the original software can properly read or export the data. However, convert.guru offers a practical workaround. Just drag and drop your file to identify the format, view it, and convert it when possible. convert.guru can still identify the file format, inspect the file, and show text or internal content. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format - such as the standard XML documents inside the Ecodial ZIP container - viewing or conversion may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your HIL file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted PSR, JRP and FRP files.

The HIL Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our HIL converter.
