About HIB files
A .HIB file is a proprietary backup archive created by the legacy software Home Inventory Pro (developed by Radium Technologies). It functions as a compressed container storing a user's complete inventory database - including item descriptions, purchase dates, warranty info, and insurance policy details - along with attached media like JPG receipts and photos.
Users typically encounter .HIB files when trying to recover data from an old hard drive or after migrating to a modern OS where the original Home Inventory Pro software (often from the early 2000s) no longer runs. A major point of friction is the proprietary lock-in; the file cannot be opened by double-clicking and appears inaccessible without the specific, now-obsolete application.
However, the .HIB format is technically a renamed ZIP archive. By changing the extension from .HIB to ZIP, users can bypass the software requirement and inspect the contents. Inside, the data is usually stored in a Microsoft Access Database (MDB) file (often named hip11.mdb or similar), which can be converted to CSV or Excel for use in modern spreadsheet tools like Google Sheets or Microsoft Excel. Attached images can simply be dragged out. Note: This file is distinct from the Windows Hibernation file (hiberfil.sys), which saves system state.
Convert.Guru analyzes your HIB file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The HIB Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our HIB converter.
