About HDV files
HDV files primarily serve two very different communities: dashcam users and racing simulator enthusiasts. Most commonly, an .HDV file is a High Definition Video recording generated by BlackVue (Pittasoft) dashcams or older JVC camcorders. While these contain video data, they often utilize proprietary file structures that standard players like Windows Media Player or the default macOS preview cannot decode. Users often have trouble when trying to share accident footage with insurers or upload clips to social media, necessitating conversion to universally compatible formats like MP4, AVI, or MOV to ensure the video and audio streams play correctly without requiring the specific BlackVue Viewer.
Alternatively, in the simulation world, .HDV stands for High-Detail Vehicle. These are critical physics parameter files used by the rFactor racing engine and related titles like Grand Prix Legends or Automobilista. These files define the mechanical soul of a virtual car - mass, suspension geometry, aerodynamics, and engine torque. While technically plain text, they are sensitive to formatting; modders often need to convert them to TXT to safely edit values in Notepad++ before converting them back to test vehicle handling changes. A third, rarer variant involves Macintosh Hard Disk Images used by emulators like Basilisk II to replicate classic Apple environments.

The HDV Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our HDV converter.
