About GWI files

A .GWI file is a proprietary email message or shortcut created by GroupWise, the enterprise collaboration suite originally developed by Novell (now part of OpenText). These files typically generate when a user drags an email message, appointment, or task from the GroupWise client interface directly onto their Windows desktop or file system.

While convenient for temporary storage within the GroupWise ecosystem, .GWI files act as "locked" containers. They utilize the Microsoft Compound File Binary (OLE2) format to store message headers, body text, and metadata, but they are not compatible with standard email clients like Microsoft Outlook, Mozilla Thunderbird, or web browsers. A common point of friction is that users archive these files thinking they are standard documents, only to discover years later they cannot be opened without a running, licensed GroupWise server environment.

To access the content, users must convert the file. For legal discovery or read-only access, converting to PDF is recommended to preserve formatting. For migration to modern email clients, converting to EML (RFC 822) or MSG ensures the message can be imported into Outlook, Gmail, or Apple Mail.

Convert.Guru analyzes your GWI file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted ICS, NAB, UWL and MIME files.

The GWI Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our GWI converter.
