About GWI files
The .GWI file extension is primarily used for GroupWise Email Message files created by Novell GroupWise (now managed by OpenText). Internally, these files rely on the Microsoft Compound (OLE) architecture to store the text of the email, attachments, sender metadata, and timestamps. GroupWise is a heavily localized, enterprise-focused system. .GWI files are completely closed and proprietary, meaning they rely almost entirely on the local GroupWise client to interpret the OLE structure. Standard email clients like Microsoft Outlook or modern webmail interfaces cannot read them natively. This locks your communication data behind specific, aging enterprise infrastructure. To share, migrate, or archive these messages, you must convert them to universally recognized formats like EML, MSG, or PDF. However, this file format is difficult to open or convert because only the original software can properly read or export the structured data without losing attachments or breaking the formatting. Standard online converters fail to process .GWI files because the internal encoding is completely undocumented outside of the GroupWise ecosystem. We can inspect the file and often extract the raw text or internal content. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.
Convert.Guru analyzes your GWI file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert GWI file to DB, SQLITE, SQLITE3, MDB, ACCDB, DBF, ODB, FDB, GDB, MYD, FRM or SQL, you can use OpenText GroupWise or similar software from the "Email message storage" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert NDF, SQLITE3, BAK, RDB, SQL, DB4, MDF, MDB, LDF, DB, DB3 or SQLITE files to GWI, try OpenText GroupWise or another comparable tool in the "Email message storage" category.
The GWI Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our GWI converter.
