About GSR2 files

The .GSR2 file is a spatial referencing sidecar file created by mapping applications from Golden Software. It stores coordinate systems, map projections, and spatial calibration data to ensure associated grids or images align correctly on a map. It is natively opened and managed by tools like Surfer and Grapher. This format is highly proprietary and strictly dependent on the main data file. A .GSR2 file is useless on its own; it must always accompany a grid (GRD) or image file. Because it locks spatial data into the Golden Software ecosystem, users working with open-source tools like QGIS or standard ArcGIS often struggle to utilize the projection data. Standard web browsers and document viewers cannot read it. Users typically need to extract the spatial data to convert it into standard ESRI PRJ (Projection Format) or world files like TFW. Converting may result in minor projection translation shifts depending on the mapping datum. This file format is difficult to open or convert because standard online converters fail to parse proprietary GIS coordinate strings. Often, only the original software can natively apply the data to a map. Our analysis can often extract the raw text or embedded coordinate data, allowing you to view the projection details without installing expensive software.

Convert.Guru analyzes your GSR2 file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The GSR2 Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our GSR2 converter.
