About GRIB2 files

A .grib2 file is a GRIdded Binary Edition 2 file used to store and transmit multidimensional historical and forecast weather data globally. You can open and visualize this data using specialized software like NASA Panoply or GIS applications such as QGIS. You can learn more on the GRIB Wikipedia page. The format is highly disadvantageous for general data extraction. It is a strictly binary format that uses advanced compression algorithms (such as JPEG2000) and complex multidimensional matrices. Standard text editors, spreadsheets, and web browsers cannot read it. It forces users to understand external meteorological code tables just to extract basic values like surface temperature or wind speed. The best conversion targets are CSV for tabular data analysis, NetCDF (NC) for scientific modeling, or .GeoTIFF for spatial mapping. Note that exporting a multidimensional weather grid to CSV often generates excessively large files and strips out spatial indexing. This file format is exceptionally difficult to open or convert because standard tools lack the specialized meteorological libraries required to decode its internal tables. Just drag and drop your file to identify the format, view it, and convert it when possible. convert.guru can still identify the file format, inspect the file, and show text or internal content. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your GRIB2 file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted GRIB, GRB, GRB2, APKG, DRY, NETCDF, CSV and NC files.

FAQ

If you want to convert GRIB2 file to NETCDF, CSV, NC, JSON, XML, YAML, YML, TOML, INI, CFG, CONF or DAT, you can use wgrib2 or similar software from the "Meteorological Data Storage" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….

To convert DBF, XML, SQLITE, XLSX, SQL, TSV, ACCDB, YAML, MDB, CSV, ODS or JSON files to GRIB2, try wgrib2 or another comparable tool in the "Meteorological Data Storage" category.

The GRIB2 Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our GRIB2 converter.
