About GRB2 files
The .GRB2 file extension stands for GRIB2 (General Regularly-distributed Information in Binary form, edition 2). It is a highly compressed, mathematically concise binary data format standardized by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). Meteorological centers like NOAA and ECMWF use it to store and transmit historical and forecast weather data. You can open .GRB2 files using specialized scientific tools like Panoply, QGIS, or the command-line utility wgrib2. This format is notoriously difficult for non-meteorologists to use. It is a strictly binary format that requires complex parameter tables to decode. You cannot open it in standard spreadsheet software or text editors. Files often exceed gigabytes in size and contain multiple multi-dimensional variables (temperature, wind speed, pressure) across different atmospheric levels and time steps. Users typically need to convert .GRB2 into standard data formats like NetCDF, CSV, or .GeoTIFF to analyze the data in Python, R, or standard GIS applications. Standard online converters routinely fail to process .GRB2 because they lack the necessary WMO decoding libraries.
