A .GNE file is primarily a legacy web script extension used by the Flickr photo-sharing service. The extension originates from Game Never Ending, an aborted multiplayer game developed by Ludicorp that eventually pivoted into Flickr. Today, users typically encounter .GNE files in two specific scenarios: as an XML-based Atom feed containing photo export data, or accidentally as a downloaded photo that should have been saved as a JPG file.
The main disadvantage of the .GNE format is that desktop operating systems do not recognize it. If a browser glitch causes a Flickr photo to download as photo.gne, standard image viewers will fail to open it. This causes immense frustration for users who just want to view or share their downloaded pictures. Alternatively, when it acts as a data feed, the raw XML is difficult to read without an RSS reader or a dedicated parser.
To resolve this, you must change or extract the underlying data. If your file is a misnamed image, the target format is JPG. If it is a photo feed, converting the internal XML to CSV or JSON makes the data usable in spreadsheet software.
