About GMZ files
The .GMZ file format is a compressed project archive used by GameMaker Studio, a popular 2D game engine developed by YoYo Games. Game developers use this format to bundle all their game assets into a single file for sharing, backup, or transferring between computers. A standard .GMZ file contains the main project configuration file along with folders filled with scripts, PNG sprites, WAV or OGG audio files, and level data. The biggest disadvantage of this format is its proprietary extension. Casual users or collaborators without a paid GameMaker license cannot simply double-click the file to view the assets inside. Standard web browsers and image viewers will fail to open it because it is not recognized as a standard media file. However, under the hood, .GMZ is essentially a standard 7Z archive. The best workaround is converting it to a standard ZIP or 7Z format, which allows you to extract all the raw media assets using common archive tools without losing quality. True engine-to-engine conversion (like turning a GameMaker project into a Unity project) is impossible due to different coding languages and internal engine logic. Often, only the original software can properly read or export the compiled game data.
Convert.Guru analyzes your GMZ file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert GMZ file to ZIP, RAR, 7Z, TAR, GZ, BZ2, XZ, LZMA, CAB, ACE, ARJ or LHA, you can use GameMaker Studio or similar software from the "Game Project Archive Storage" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert XXE, 7Z, Z, PAK, LHA, DEB, UUE, TAR, LZH, ZIP, PKG or RAR files to GMZ, try GameMaker Studio or another comparable tool in the "Game Project Archive Storage" category.
The GMZ Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our GMZ converter.
