Convert GMW to another file type

To convert GMW workspaces to another format, you need Global Mapper or other GIS software.

Convert a file to GMW

To convert other file formats to the "Geospatial Project File" file type, you need software like Global Mapper or a similar tool.

About GMW files

A .GMW file is a Global Mapper Workspace, a text-based project file used by Global Mapper to store the state of a GIS session. Unlike self-contained formats, a .GMW file acts as a 'skeleton' - it saves your zoom level, projection settings, layer styling, and digitizer tool configurations, but it does not contain the actual map data. It only stores directory paths pointing to the external raster (TIF, JPG) or vector (SHP, DXF) files on your hard drive.

This architecture creates a major friction point: if you email a .GMW file to a colleague or move it to a different folder, the file breaks because it loses the connection to the referenced data. Users often encounter 'File Not Found' errors when trying to open workspaces shared without their dependencies. To share a map reliably, you should not convert the .GMW itself, but rather use Global Mapper to bundle the project into a GMP (Global Mapper Package), which compresses both the workspace and the data into a single file. For non-GIS workflows, the best practice is exporting the 'current view' to PDF for printing or JPG for web use.

Convert.Guru analyzes your GMW file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted DT2, GMP, GIC and DWG files.

FAQ

If you want to convert GMW file to DWG, INI, CFG, CONF, CONFIG, JSON, XML, YAML, YML, TOML, ENV or PROPERTIES, you can use Global Mapper or similar software from the "GIS Project Workspace" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….

To convert ZSHRC, CONF, RCFILE, GITCONFIG, RC, PLIST, BASHRC, CONFIG, PROFILE, INI, PREFS or CFG files to GMW, try Global Mapper or another comparable tool in the "GIS Project Workspace" category.

The GMW Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our GMW converter.
