About GIO files
A .gio file is an Adagio Score file, primarily used as a text-based representation of musical notes and MIDI data. Originally developed at Carnegie Mellon University by Roger B. Dannenberg, the Adagio language allows composers and programmers to write out musical scores using plain text.
These files are natively processed by Nyquist, a specialized sound synthesis and analysis programming environment, as well as the legacy CMU MIDI Toolkit. Because Adagio acts as a bridge between human-readable text and machine-readable MIDI, the files consist entirely of alphanumeric characters defining pitch, duration, and articulation.
The main disadvantage of the .gio format is its extreme obscurity and lack of modern compatibility. It is not an audio file, nor is it a standard MIDI file. This means modern Digital Audio Workstations (DAWs) like Ableton Live or Logic Pro cannot open it, and standard media players cannot play it. Users are left looking at lines of code instead of hearing music.
To actually listen to or edit the composition, conversion is mandatory. For editing in modern notation software or DAWs, convert .gio to MID (Standard MIDI File). For playback or web distribution, render it to audio formats like WAV or MP3. Drag and drop your .gio file here to analyze and convert it - free, online, and without installing command-line audio programming tools.

The GIO Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our GIO converter.
