About THP files

The .THP file extension is primarily associated with the Nintendo GameCube and Wii consoles as a proprietary movie container format. These files are used to store full-motion video (FMV) cutscenes, opening cinematics, and credit sequences within game disc images. Because .THP is a highly specialized format optimized for Nintendo's hardware (specifically utilizing a variant of JPEG for video and ADPCM for audio), it is completely incompatible with standard desktop media players like Microsoft Windows Media Player or Apple QuickTime.

Users typically encounter these files when exploring game assets or ripping content from discs using tools like Dolphin Emulator. The main challenge is playback; without conversion, the file is essentially a "black box" of data. For viewing or editing, the best workflow is to convert .THP files to MP4 or MKV using command-line tools like FFmpeg or specialized utilities such as THPConv. If you simply need the soundtrack, extracting the audio stream to WAV or MP3 is a common requirement.
