Convert GIL to another file type

To convert GIL Cache files to another format, you need Cinema 4D or other 3D software.

Convert a file to GIL

To convert other file formats to the "Render Cache File" file type, you need software like Cinema 4D or a similar tool.

About GIL files

The .GIL file acts as either a Global Illumination cache file used by Cinema 4D or a game logic instruction file for the Game Creator asset in Unity. In 3D animation workflows, a global illumination cache stores precalculated light bounces. This prevents the computer from recalculating complex lighting for every single frame. In game development, the file stores custom logic triggers and actions.

These files are highly specialized and notoriously closed. You need a costly subscription to Cinema 4D or a specific Unity environment to open them properly. They are proprietary binary or serialized formats. Because they contain application-specific cache data or internal node logic, they are entirely useless outside their native software ecosystems. Standard web browsers and basic text editors cannot render them.

Users often attempt to convert or extract data from a .GIL file when they lack the original software or want to migrate a 3D project to a different engine. However, true conversion to a universal 3D format like OBJ or FBX is not directly possible because .GIL does not store 3D geometry. It only stores mathematical lighting data or game logic. The best workaround is to open the parent project file (like C4D) and export the entire scene, or attempt to read the game logic file as raw text to salvage scripts into TXT or JSON.

This file format is exceptionally difficult to open or convert. Often, only the original software can properly read or export the data. However, convert.guru can still identify the file format, inspect the file, and show text or internal content. Just drag and drop your file to identify the format, view it, and convert it when possible. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your GIL file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted GILS, BRH and REFER files.

FAQ

If you want to convert GIL file to JPG, PDF, PNG, GIF, BMP, TIFF, TIF, WEBP, ICO, CUR, PSD or PSB, you can use Cinema 4D or similar software from the "Global Illumination Cache Data" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….

To convert RAW, PNG, AI, NEF, PSB, DNG, SVG, GIF, EPS, JPG, ARW or PDF files to GIL, try Cinema 4D or another comparable tool in the "Global Illumination Cache Data" category.

The GIL Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our GIL converter.
