About GIL files

A .gil file is primarily known as a Global Illumination (GI) cache file generated by Maxon Cinema 4D. These files store pre-calculated light bounce data to accelerate rendering times for complex 3D scenes. While essential for workflow efficiency, they are proprietary, binary "helper" files that function solely as dependencies for the main C4D project. You cannot simply double-click a .gil file to view the 3D scene, nor can you open it in standard image viewers like Adobe Photoshop. They are often large, version-specific, and useless if separated from their parent project file.

A secondary use case involves Game Creator for Unity, where the extension stores game logic instructions. These are similarly locked down, designed only for the Unity engine at runtime or during development.

Users typically encounter .gil files when digging through project folders and mistaking them for usable media. If your goal is to view the content, the practical "conversion" route is not direct file transcoding, but rather opening the parent project in Cinema 4D and rendering the scene to a standard format like MP4, JPG, or TIFF. For archiving, it is generally safe to delete these cache files as they can be regenerated, freeing up significant disk space.

Convert.Guru analyzes your GIL file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted GILS, BRH and REFER files.

The GIL Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our GIL converter.
