About GFS files
The .GFS extension represents two distinct but technical file types: Game Data Archives and GML Feature Schemas.
Most commonly, .GFS files are proprietary asset containers used by video game engines, specifically the Reverge Engine (used in Skullgirls) and Sony's PhyreEngine. These archives bundle thousands of individual game assets - such as PNG textures, WAV audio, and 3D models - into a single file to optimize loading times. The primary challenge for users is that these are binary, "black box" formats; you cannot open them with standard tools like Windows Explorer. To access the content for modding or viewing, you must extract or convert the internal assets to standard formats.
Alternatively, in the geospatial sector, a .GFS file is a GML Feature Schema generated by the GDAL library. These are plain text (XML-style) files created automatically when opening a GML file without an associated schema (XSD). They define the data structure (fields and types) for the GIS software. While helpful, they can sometimes contain incorrect type inferences if the source data is ambiguous.
Conversion Recommendations:
- For Game Assets: Convert/Extract to PNG or JPG for images, and WAV or MP3 for audio files.
- For GIS: View as XML or convert to XSD for formal validation.
- For Archiving: Repackage extracted contents into ZIP or 7Z.
Convert.Guru analyzes your GFS file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
Users also converted GML, UPC, BUSAN201 and VD2 files.
The GFS Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our GFS converter.
