About GFIE files

The .GFIE file extension is the native project format for Greenfish Icon Editor Pro, an open-source application designed for creating icons, cursors, animations, and pixel art. These files store complex workspace configurations, including multiple image pages (like 16x16, 32x32, and 256x256 sizes), editable layers, transparency settings, and active selection areas.

The main disadvantage of the .GFIE format is its proprietary structure. It is not an image format; it is a workspace file. Standard image viewers, mobile devices, and web browsers cannot open it. Furthermore, mainstream graphic editors like Adobe Photoshop or GIMP do not support it. This creates a hard block if you need to share your icon drafts with clients, web developers, or colleagues who do not have the Greenfish software installed.

To make your graphics usable, you must convert the .GFIE file into a standard format. Converting to PNG is the best choice for a single image, as it preserves the alpha channel transparency needed for modern UI design. Converting to ICO is mandatory if you are building desktop applications for Windows, as it maintains the multi-size image structure required for OS scaling. You can also export to JPG if transparency is unnecessary and you need a smaller file size.

Because .GFIE is a closed, proprietary format, standard online converters usually fail to process the complex layer and multi-page data. Often, only the original Greenfish Icon Editor Pro software can correctly read the file and export the pixel data.

Convert.Guru analyzes your GFIE file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
