To convert other file formats to the "Game Engine Plugin" file type, you need software like GameMaker or a similar tool.
The .gex file extension primarily acts as a container for GameMaker Legacy Extensions, used by older iterations of GameMaker: Studio (specifically version 1.4) to bundle scripts, assets, and external DLLs. While these packages were once the standard for distributing game functionality, they present significant hurdles today: modern GameMaker versions utilize .yymps formats, often refusing to import legacy .gex files directly without complex workarounds. This creates a "locked box" scenario where valuable code or assets are trapped in an obsolete wrapper.
Alternatively, a .gex file may be a Symbolic Geometry File created by Geometry Expressions. These contain mathematical models defined by constraints rather than fixed coordinates. The main constraint here is interoperability; a raw .gex file cannot be viewed in standard web browsers or document editors. To share these diagrams with students or colleagues, users typically need to convert them into WebP or PNG for static viewing, HTML5 for interactive web embedding, or LaTeX for academic publishing.
