Extract text from GameMaker extensions (GEX)

The .GEX file is primarily a GameMaker Extension Package used by GameMaker (developed by YoYo Games). It bundles custom code, scripts, and external libraries (such as DLL for Windows, SO for Linux, or DYLIB for macOS) to expand the core capabilities of the game engine. Other common variations of the .GEX extension include Minecraft Emotecraft mod files (which store character animations), Geometry Expressions mathematical drawings, and extended Gerber PCB data files.
The main disadvantage of .GEX files is their highly proprietary and context-specific structure. A GameMaker extension is essentially a packaged archive designed strictly for the GameMaker IDE. You cannot simply open it in a standard code editor to read all the functions, and manually modifying its contents can corrupt the package indexing. Similarly, Minecraft emote files are completely useless outside of their specific modding environment.
To access the code or update an old extension, you will usually want to convert or extract the .GEX file into standard ZIP, GML (GameMaker Language scripts), or JSON formats. Emotecraft users often need to convert their files into raw JSON animation data for editing in 3D software.
Because .GEX is a closed format tailored to specific software, standard online converters usually fail to process it. Only the original software can properly compile or export the intended data.
